At Teignbridge Canoe Club, paddlesport is about much more than boats and waterways. It is about creating opportunities, building confidence, and ensuring that everyone feels welcome on the water. One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the growth of ShePaddles, a movement dedicated to encouraging and supporting more women and girls to participate in paddlesport.

Since the creation of the club’s ShePaddles group in 2023, Teignbridge Canoe Club has worked hard to understand and address some of the barriers that women can face when entering the sport. Through open conversations, member feedback and a commitment to inclusion, the club has developed practical solutions that are making a real difference.

One of the early successes of the initiative was identifying equipment needs. Historically, some club boats were larger and heavier, making them less accessible for many paddlers. By listening to members and securing external funding, the club was able to invest in a range of new kayaks and equipment better suited to a wider range of paddlers. This investment formed part of a wider development programme that received over £9,000 of funding support from Sport England, helping to improve access, training and progression opportunities.

The club’s commitment to inclusion was formally recognised when Teignbridge Canoe Club achieved ShePaddles Club accreditation in December 2023. This milestone reflected the hard work of volunteers, committee members and paddlers who share a vision of creating a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.

“Because she paddles is part of the club but not a silo, It’s become part of the culture that everyone supports one another and has open and honest conversations about the challenges and joys of paddling. I know that on a trip if I am feeling anxious, that I can say and it won’t be ignored or laughed at.”

The impact is already being seen. Female participation within the club has continued to grow, with women representing an increasing proportion of both membership and new enquiries. The introduction of dedicated paddleboard sessions and quieter trips has created opportunities for people to develop skills and confidence in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere. These sessions have proved particularly popular with women who may be new to paddlesport or looking to return to activity after a break.

What makes ShePaddles special is that it is not just about getting more women onto the water. It is also about supporting women to become leaders, coaches, organisers and role models within the club. By encouraging participation at every level, the initiative helps to create a more diverse and vibrant paddling community where everyone can thrive.

“The reason that she paddles is important to me is because it is opened the dialogue about what people want to get from their paddling, and that has led to finding that there is a space for everyone to be themselves in this club.”

At Teignbridge Canoe Club, there is no single way to enjoy paddlesport. Members can explore sea kayaking along the beautiful South Devon coastline, enjoy paddleboarding on sheltered waters, develop white-water skills, join paddlesport adventures and enjoy the social side of being part of an active outdoor community. The club’s ethos is built around respect, personal development, safety and adventure, ensuring that every member can find their own path on the water.

Looking ahead, the future of ShePaddles at Teignbridge Canoe Club is bright. With continued investment in equipment, training and opportunities, the club remains committed to making paddlesport accessible to all.
